Every single action that an individual takes leaves sets / traces of data behind. From browsing the internet to shop for your favourite book to how often you recharge airtime data on your phone to the number of steps you take daily that your smartwatch counts. How then are businesses able to take advantage of these little bits of data that you leave behind? How are they able to ensure that they make your next shopping experience better, faster, easier? One of the answers is big data.

Big data a term that has been on today’s headlines is a as result of data that has been collected over the years becoming so huge that you need many computers to store it. These are millions of data sets which when manipulated and analyzed, produces useful information that can be used by the business executives to make smarter decisions about how the company is positioned and run.

To be able to manipulate and analyze these data sets and come up with various algorithms, Python in conjunction with tools such as R, Rapidminer or Orange are often used. It is with this view that Gebeya is organizing a one day boot camp to introduce individuals to Python Programming and various concepts of Python such as dictionaries and sets, python version numbers, using the python shell among others.

By the end of the one day, the individuals should have a clearer understanding of scripting with Python and be on their way to becoming data scientists, with more practise at the Gebeya Academy of course :-).
