It’s the 11th edition of Nairobi Stew and it feels like we just started yesterday! Through 500 micro-investors, we have crowdfunded 10 microgrants totaling ksh. 245,000 for Nairobi’s change makers, all selected by popular vote. That’s about as democratic as change-making gets. Want to be one of the micro-investors for round #11? We have good news, you only need 500 bob to play!

After that, you get to enjoy your bowl of stew, interact with other “investors” in the audience and discuss which initiative is most investment-worthy, after which you’ll exercise your right to vote. At the end of the night, we count the ballots and the winner of the popular vote goes home with a crowdfunded pot of donations to carry out their project. The winner will then come back to a future Stew dinner to report their project’s progress.

The last winner was Ahadi Pads, who make sanitary pads using breathable fabrics, to address the problem of girls staying out of school during their period because they cannot afford pads. They also teach girls menstrual health and hygiene.

As much as Nairobi Stew is a great way to raise funds for a worthy project, the money is not the best part about the evening. The best thing is that the presenters get to build community support and connections to local resources, volunteers and expertise. Our aim is to make sure that every presenter of the evening goes home with connections and pledges of support from the community.
